Clinton Astroturfers???

As many of us have seen, the proliferation of pro-Hillary bloggers was quite pronounced after the 2nd quarter and I for one have always wondered if this influx was due to the Clinton campaign paying for people to blog on her behalf or if it was just a coincidence.

Well, here we finally have the expenditures from the 2nd quarter on Opensecrets.org.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/expend _detail.asp?id=N00000019&code=M30&am p;cycle=2008

Under Internet Media expenditures and only counting expenditures since April, there was over $300,000 paid to the Mayfield Strategy Group.  Josh Ross, formerly head of Kerry's Internet staff, is the head of Mayfield.

So I went ahead and did a little search on some of the most pro-Hillary posters here at MyDD.  I checked when they first posted a diary and first made comments here.  Check after the fold for what I found.

I found at least 5 pro-Hillary posters that have joined MyDD since April of this year.  Here are their first diary post date, their first comment date and how many diaries and comments they have made.

Areyouready:  First diary 7/2/07, 162 diaries total; First comment 7/2/07, 3,154 comments total.

Lori:  First diary 8/1/07, 17 diaries total; First comment 7/22/07, 1,895 comments total.

HoldenCaulfield:  First diary 9/18/07, 6 diaries total;  First comment 9/18/07, 649 comments total.

RJEvans:  First diary 9/7/07, 4 diaries total; First comment 8/21/07, 655 comments total.

Sepulvedaj3:  First diary 8/16/07, diaries total; First comment 5/11/07, 929 comments total.

They may not like being called out like this, but many of their comments are meant to sidetrack any debate on Clinton or to cheerlead incessantly for her.

Look, I don't mind Clinton bloggers that have some reasoning behind them, like Georgep or DpAndrews, posting and defending their candidate.  Each candidate has those kinds of supporters writing for them here.

I only call these people out because I think they bring the level of debate on this site to a lower level and I for one am sick of it!

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (2.00 / 1)

Good luck with this one.  I started posting a week or so before Obama announced his candidacy, does that make me an Obama astroturfer?  I take your point but I don't support your conclusions, especially calling out individual posters.

EVERY DAY there is a hit piece of Clinton either by DerekLarsson, rssrai, TarHeel or some other user. EVERY DAY, and they always make the rec list. You don't see Clinton supporters trying to demonize Edwards or Obama with countless diaries on the same subject over and over again. We have to defend ourselves and our candidate on this site and I will admit, we get rude, but as the minority on this site, we HAVE to.

For the most part, Hillary supporters don't even visit DKOS. I know that I do not.

The impact of that on DKOS' relevance when Hillary Clinton is elected President is something that the poobahs at KOS will have to assess for themselves...much in the same way that a labor union would have to assess the risk of endorsing a losing candidate.

lets be real (2.00 / 0)

the numbers of people both here and at kos has been GREATLY EXAGERATED.

what, there....are maybe....maybe 100,000 - 150,000 0r 200,000 or so folks that have signed up all together...

But how many really show up on a steady basis?

1, 2..3 thousand?

hells bells - that is a small, small...you could even say, teeny... percentage of those dems that will be voting nationally in the primaries.

Thats an easy deal...you guys can win on Kos...and we'll win on the primary days.

Then after February 5, we'll all stop and see who actually is leading the Democratic Party.

My bet is on Hill.

I don't think any fair observer gives credence to such a claim.  As for her being more driven by politics than principle I reserve the right to make that argument if I choose.  You surely don't intend to insulate her from every criticism on the grounds that it might be made by our common adversaries in the general election, do you?  You have convincingly made your point about attacks on her which are unsupportable, scurrilous right-wing frames, but other than that you get to argue her merits and/or weaknesses like everyone else.

Accusing me of sidetracking the debate is unfounded and I stand by that. You have no proof of such actions.

The people that are sidetracking the debate are people like you. You bring nothing to the conversation with this diary, or do nothing to better the site. After sporadic posting in the last three years, you have the nerve to come here and criticize several Clinton supporters for having a voice.

confession (2.00 / 3)

I am 53 years old.  Actually, the Clintons have been paying me since I first became politically active in 1968.  (They knew back then that they would be running for president, and the Internets would be invented, and they would need astroturfers like me to do their dirty work.)  Anyway, they groomed me for decades until five years ago or so when I first joined Daily Kos.  They kept paying and grooming me until this year when I started posting pro-Hillary diaries and comments.

In fact, they pay me extra, because I don't only post, but I am the secret organizer of the underground Hillary cabal, which brings together all these secretly paid astroturfers via Hillaryis44 and Chelseais46 (bet you didn't know about that one!)

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (1.00 / 1)

Hillary Clinton supporters meet at her web site blog and at their Yahoo site. Whenever someone posts something about Hillary the call goes out and suddenly they descend on a site to recommend the diary and to comment positively. Their whole purpose is to stay on message. The leader of the gang is Alegre. Whenever something is posted that doesn't cast their girl in a good light they also send out the 911 to descend upon the offending website and on message attack the person posting the diary. And when they aren't hanging at the Hillary site or at Yahoo they do their thing at Hillaryis44 where they spew their nonsense about all the other candidates. It's a place where they feel at ease to be off message and say the things they would never say here. This diary shows that mods did a lot of cleaning up.  Looks like Freaky Thirsty may be gone, at the least all his troll rates were removed.

Now, if we can stop JWR from gratuitously abusing the ratings system, we may get somewhere.  I am amazed he continues to use the ratings system in that manner, since his abuse of the ratings system was one of the main reasons the issue was brought up last time and the ratings system changed.  At the time he claimed to not know the system very well.

This post is silly (none / 0)

but I'm wondering why a professed non-Clinton supporter would care how Clinton was spending her money. Let's just think about this for a minute. Wouldn't you as a Clinton hater be glad that she was wasting her money on internet outreach here at mydd rather than using it to expand grassroots support around the country? As someone who does not support Edwards or Obama, I would hope that they would spend their money on astroturfing the internet. You know why? B/c that's wasting valuable resources (especially in Edwards' case) that won't get anyone to vote for them in the primaries/caucuses. I think the internet is nice for crafting a media image or collecting financial donations. Getting people to the polls? Not so much, at least not here at MyDD....

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (1.50 / 2)

There's no real way of proving that the HRC campaign has paid bloggers infiltrating the netroots. But considering her lukewarm reception at YearlyKos (which I attended) and the lack of positive politi-blog commentary for Hillary prior to this summer, I can certainly understand the motivation. Manipulating the media (which the Clintons seem to have mastered) isn't just limited to print and television.

The bottom line is that the blogosphere is no less of a spin zone than the MSM, regardless of which side of the fence you're on. I've learned to just read and extract objective arguments from any baseless theorizing, hoping that most others are doing the same. Of all the candidates, I think that Edwards and Ron Paul supporters have been ahead of the game for months. The rest have just followed their lead.

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (none / 0)

Shaun, I don't think your join date alone is reason to suspect the participation motives of a new blogger. It's when a person joins during an election cycle and then puts out diaries and comments only related to that topic alone, it makes one skeptical if they are truly interested in the party and the issues we need to address as a whole.

I have noticed a good portion of  Pro Hillary diarists have not been part of MYDD until this election cycle. And a lot of them (MEANING NOT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU) have diaries only concerned with Hillary or her opponents 95% of the time. And even their comments are on Hillary related cheerleading a majority of the time. Very little time on other topics, if anything.

Even Francis Holland who has inexplicably shown up on Huffington Post used to spend most of his time praising Hillary while taking to task white blogosphere for not being interested enough in pro African American issues(which I actually agree with). He too spent little time bring up African American related electoral issues or issues with other DEmocrats. Every diary was about either his martyrdom or Hillary the Queen Bee. It's too bad he did not show us any of that side of his personality that did good work on the Jena 6 case since he has been banned here.

Dem Dem, Holden,  or Whatever literary name he chooses to adopt next pretty much spends his time shilling for Hillary, railing against imaginary Naderites, or defending Clinton cronies. He doesnt very little time discussing non Hillary topics. And he too has joined in only after the Hillary candidacy and I expect him to disappear after Hillary is President because he seems to be not interested in contributing to non Hillary related issues.

AreYouReady is always ready to shill for HIllary and I doubt he has posted even as much as 10 comments on non Presidential Primary related topics.

GeorgeP and Bookgrl seem interested in party politics in general even if GeorgeP started out talking pretty much about Hillary most of the time.

Then we had the bizarre case of some Canadian who claimed to be an LA African American female resident and she used two aliases to prop up her support for Hillary. Then she denied it until we gave her proof.

HWC, I remember him doing some front page diaries. I dont have the time to say if he participates in more than a few non Presidential related topics or when he joined here.

I have seen a few like JGarcia who I think have supported Hillary and have been part of MYDD for a while now and discuss various topics.(sorry jgarcia if I am wrong on this)  So obviously, I got no problem with him and likeminded folk.

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (none / 0)

Most of the Obama posters on here (save shaun) have come on very recently and their posts are virtually 100% Obama.  A Very large group of current Edwards supporters has also shown up after March/April, and they care to discuss mostly Edwards non-stop.  I find myself sometimes talking to just the diarist when it comes to extremely important issues for our party (such as Todd Beeton's appreciated harping on Bush's SCHIP veto.)  So, whatever point you are trying to make here fits the vast majority of posters here, and particularly Obama posters, IMO.

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (none / 0)

I wouldn't be shocked if it really is the case. But I do remember a some pro Obama and Edwards talk among the regulars in the past. So the fact that a lot more got added on didn't get my attention as much. I am sure every candidate has their own group of supporters who have come to tihs site just for the electoral aspect. I hope many of them decide to stay on after the fact.

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (none / 0)

Frankly  I think the pros and cons of individual posters, their allegiances and motives is pretty much moot.  I appreciate your apparent acknowledgement of my legitimacy but honestly I probably wouldn't be blogging here, or at least not nearly as much, in the absence of an Obama candidacy and I am willing to extend the same benefit of the doubt to the whole community.

Having said that I think the quality of the posts often warrants concern, on all sides; the absence of content and the lack of mutual respect that we seem to get from time to time, and the banal cheer-leading.  Still, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Re: Clinton Astroturfers??? (none / 0)

Well I appreciate your vote of confidence George, which I certainly reciprocate, but I was hardly the only Obama aligned poster back then, far from it.  And while some are no longer with us and others have arrived I see that as just the normal ebb and flow of interest and attendance.  And I am applying the same criteria to Hillary supporters and others as well.  I don't think it matters a tinker's damn who arrived when and how determined they are in their support, just that they manage to maintain a certain level of mutual respect and commitment to contributing something to the discussion and that still seems a bit challenging sometimes.
